Lee Man Tat:Set the Target

In 1997 I was 19. A traffic accident happened and my life dramatically changed from a worker specialized in installing large glass window to a very different situation.

After I was sent to the hospital for 3 to 4 months, my conscious began to recover gradually. Then, the doctor told me that the accident injured my 5th and 6th cervical spine and my rest life would spend in wheelchair. I could not stop asking the doctor whether I could push the wheelchair myself and whether I could drive. The doctor just told me “definitely not”, and I need to exercises as much as possible. Living in the wheelchair would be my destiny.

I spent two years to recuperate and recover, and my family members frequently visited me and do massage for my hands and feet during this period. Besides, I want to thank a member volunteer from Direction Association. Through his sharing, I knew that the handicapped could also apply and obtain the driving license and is allowed to drive alone. With his help, my confidence was rebuilt, and courage came back to me again. Moreover, I am grateful to my family members. It is their love and caring that have driven me to do sports and exercise my body and hands. Finally, I succeed in obtaining my driving license and enhance the ability for outdoor activity. Further more, as I have made some achievements, Table Tennis is now what I am pursuing. With the help of Hong Kong Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, I won a Table Tennis Doubles silver medal with a Hong Kong Sport Team member, and was then promoted to Hong Kong Sports Team for competing in the Asia Games.

Although I was handicapped for more than a decade, I experienced lying in bed due to general paralysis, sitting in the wheelchair, driving all by myself and winning honors in the sports field. I have to admit that physical trauma made me want to stop, but it’s not wise to give up and avoid the reality. As a proverb saying “where there is a will, there is a way”, I have truly proved it.

Doing voluntary works is the way I repay the society. I hope that like me can also set their goals in life, and believe that you can do what I do. A beautiful and meaningful life is waiting for you ahead.
